Hội An, Vietnam – April 25, 2024 – The Field Restaurant in Hoi An has been awarded the Gold Platinum Low-Carbon Tourism Standard by Magnus International Thailand. Presented by Mr. Kulladejha Siriwattanawat, Chairman of the Thailand Environment Management Fund, on April 25 in Hoi An, this prestigious certification marks the first time a Vietnamese tourism business has achieved this remarkable distinction.

Magnus International Thailand and the Low-Carbon Tourism Standard

Magnus International Thailand is a leading provider of carbon offset and environmental project management services, also known as “carbon credits.” Currently, Magnus International Thailand is a pioneer in consulting and project development services, partnering with both the public and private sectors; focusing on environmental project management under the concept of minimizing the impact of climate change.

Mr. Dravida Balajeev, CEO of Magnus International Thailand, states that tourism plays a vital role in generating income, promoting employment, and spreading prosperity to different regions. However, it also has environmental implications. Therefore, sustainable tourism development is of paramount importance.
 
The Thailand Environment Management Fund and Magnus International Thailand have established the Low-Carbon Tourism Standard, committed to raising awareness among tourism stakeholders about the importance of conserving natural resources and the environment, as well as supporting efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement ethical business practices. The Platinum level certification of the Low-Carbon Tourism Standard is awarded to hotels and restaurants that demonstrate sustainable business practices, consider environmental impact, and commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Field Restaurant Becomes the First to Receive "Platinum Certification for Low-Carbon Tourism Standard"

The Thailand Environment Management Fund and Magnus International have independently assessed numerous tourism-oriented restaurant businesses across various localities in Vietnam. Based on the criteria set forth by the global carbon emission reduction standard, The Field Restaurant Hoi An has been recognized with the Platinum level for its sustainable business practices, consideration of environmental impact, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contributions to the local community. This marks the first Vietnamese establishment to achieve the Platinum certification for the Low-Carbon Tourism Standard.
To obtain the certification from Magnus International Thailand, The Field Restaurant had to meet the following criteria:
  • Waste management practices: Implement comprehensive waste management systems across all departments and operations of the restaurant.
  • Waste management training: Provide waste management training to all staff members across all departments and operations of the restaurant.
  • Waste minimization and energy management initiatives: Implement waste minimization and energy management initiatives.
  • Community engagement for environmental and livelihood initiatives: Engage in community-based environmental and livelihood initiatives.

Since 2017, The Field Hoi An restaurant has begun implementing a circular economy model, including waste management in all parts of the restaurant, deploying energy management initiatives, minimizing food waste, saying no to plastic waste…
 
In recent years, The Field has taken a step further in developing this model by using organic food from its own invested garden to serve diners. The restaurant also continues to implement circular waste activities linked to the responsibility and benefits of environmental protection and community livelihood improvement.

Significance of Certification

According to Magnus International Thailand, the “gold” and “platinum” level certifications received by The Field demonstrate the restaurant’s commitment to sustainable business practices, considering environmental impact and striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and impact on the local community.
 
Mr. Kulladejha Siriwattanawat, Chairman of the Thailand Environment Management Fund, said that this award will be a motivation for government agencies, experts, and businesses operating in the tourism industry to spread awareness of business practices that prioritize environmental conservation and work together to develop sustainable tourism for future generations.
 
“This certification shows that the path we have chosen to take is green and sustainable development. It is also the motivation for us to continue on this path,” said Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh, Director of Emic Hospitality Company – the operating unit of The Field Hoi An restaurant. Mr. Thanh added that countries in the region, as well as around the world, are very interested in the issue of low carbon and carbon credits in business, including tourism. This is in line with the current global trend of doing business in a green and sustainable way. According to Mr. Thanh, in Vietnam, businesses are only just beginning to take steps towards a green economy and green tourism.

“In Hoi An city, we have also recorded a few tourism establishments like The Field Hoi An Eco Resort choosing this green and circular development path. We hope this certification will be the starting gun for many more businesses to be recognized,” said Mr. Nguyen The Hung, Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People’s Committee.
 
Mr. Hung also hoped that many other business entities would see the sustainable benefits of this activity and participate. This is good not only for Hoi An tourism but also for tourism businesses.

Joint Commitment for Sustainable Tourism Development

On this occasion, the Thailand Environment Management Fund, Magnus International, a carbon and environmental offset project management company, and Emic Hospitality – Hoi An have signed a joint commitment to sustainability, together contributing to promoting Hoi An as a model sustainable tourism destination. This cooperation will focus on implementing environmentally friendly activities in hotels, restaurants, and public transportation, as well as promoting responsible tourism among visitors and businesses.

The Platinum Low Carbon Tourism Standard certification award has opened up many opportunities and motivated The Field restaurant to continue pursuing its long-term goal and business philosophy of “green” and “sustainable” services. This certification is considered a quantified value that can be converted into a “Low Carbon Value” according to the current mandatory assessment trend, contributing to the common goal of achieving zero emissions by 2050 (also known as Net Zero).
